Daily Caller News Foundation co-founder Tucker Carlson’s investigative team alleged Friday that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the first would-be assassin of President Donald Trump, became radically anti-Trump in a brief period of time.
A source told Carlson that he received access to Crooks’ accounts by utilizing tools used by private investigators and found his primary email and deactivated YouTube accounts. His comments on YouTube indicated that he radically shifted from being a Trump supporter to being passionately anti-Trump, where he called Trump supporters “brainwashed, “dumb” and “racist” in February 2020, Carlson reported on the Tucker Carlson Network.
In July 2019, Crooks commented on YouTube that Trump is the “literal definition of Patriotism” and called for the deaths of anti-Trump congresswomen “who don’t deserve anything this [country] has given them,” Carlson showed. He also called for “Trump-hating Democrats” to have their heads chopped off.
In early 2020, Crooks’ political views seemingly changed radically. In a YouTube comment from January 2020, Crooks allegedly referred to Trump’s “stupidity,” mocked the idea of the “deep state” and accused Trump supporters of sounding like a “cult.” (RELATED: One Year Later, Questions Remain About Butler Despite Trump Being ‘Very Satisfied’ With Investigation)
“How can you people call other sheep, but you are [too] brainwashed to realize how dumb you are,” Crooks allegedly wrote. “If someone told you [C]hinese people dissented from aliens and [then] put the fake archeologist who found out on air as ‘evidence’ you’d believe it. But somehow you guys have ‘woken up.’ I mean literally you guys sound like a cult at times.”

“No I’m pretty sure people are just racist and Trump is one them, there does not need to be a deep state for that,” Crooks allegedly wrote, according to Carlson.
Crooks also reportedly attacked concerns about voter fraud as “ignorant” in another comment from May 2020, and warned that Trump could win again in 2024. In August 2020, he allegedly called for conducting “terrorism-style attacks” in order to effectively fight the government.
“Perhaps but Trump won in an upset victory in 2016 and could do the same again, either way I believe the outcome will be irrelevant,” Crooks allegedly wrote, according to Carlson.
Crooks then allegedly outlined the ways to perform a terrorist attack on the government, saying that a person should “sneak a bomb” into a government building and “set it off before anyone sees you.”
“[In my opinion] the only way to fight the [government] is with terrorism style attacks, sneak a bomb into an essential building [and] set it off before anyone sees you, track down and important people/politicians/military leaders etc and try to assassinate them. Any sort of head to head fight is suicide and ambush/surprise attacks likely aren’t going to end well,” Crooks allegedly wrote.
One user on YouTube with the username, Willy_Tepes, allegedly encouraged Crooks to commit violence, Carlson said. In mid-2019, Crooks searched Trump’s name online more than 700 times and looked up the best places for mass shootings. He also searched how to shoot an AR-15 as fast as possible, “fertilizer bomb” and “Trump civil war.”
Carlson accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of covering up and lying about Crooks’ shifting political views. In response to Carlson, the FBI stated on X that they had always been transparent about Crooks having an online footprint.
“This FBI has never said Thomas Crooks had no online footprint. Ever,” the FBI Rapid Response account wrote on X.

The FBI stated in August 2024 that they found “no definitive ideology” or motive for Crooks.
The FBI did not immediately respond to the DCNF”s request for comment.
