Country Singer Todd Snider Dead At 59

Todd Snider, known for heavily influencing the alt-country and Americana music genres died Friday at the age of 59.

His label, Aimless Records, confirmed his death on Facebook Saturday morning after his family revealed Friday he had been hospitalized due to an “undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia.”

“Aimless, Inc. Headquarters is heartbroken to share that our Founder, our Folk Hero, our Poet of the World, our Vice President of the Abrupt Change Dept., the Storyteller, our beloved Todd Daniel Snider has departed this world,” their statement began.

“Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right words, who knew how to distill everything down to its essence with words and song while delivering the most devastating, hilarious, and impactful turn of phrases? Always creating rhyme and meter that immediately felt like an old friend or a favorite blanket. Someone who could almost always find the humor in this crazy ride on Planet Earth.”

The statement from Aimless Records continued, “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens.”

“He got up every morning and started writing, always working towards finding his place among the songwriting giants that sat on his record shelves, those same giants who let him into their lives and took him under their wings, who he studied relentlessly. Guy Clark, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker.”

They went on to say they’d continue to pay tribute to Snider’s contributions to the music industry by “carrying his stories and songs that contain messages of love, compassion, and peace.”

“We love you Todd, sail on old friend, we’ll see you again out there on the road somewhere down the line. You will always be a force of nature,” they wrote.

Snider joined forces with Walker in the 1980s and became the face of Nashville’s alt-country and rock alternative music scene.

He solidified his place on the alt-country map with his 2004 album “East Nashville Skyline,” and went on to found his own record label, Aimless Records in 2008.

Over the last month, he experienced an assault, arrest and the cancelation of his tour. On November 3, Snider’s team announced he was a victim of a violent assault outside of his hotel, and said he had suffered severe injuries. Days after the alleged assault, he was arrested in relation to a disturbance. Body cam footage released by police later revealed a chaotic exchange between Snider and the police, and showed the singer repeatedly telling officers he was “famous” and wasn’t homeless.

The circumstances that led to his recent police-involved interactions remain unclear. (RELATED: REPORT: Police Arrest Country Singer Todd Snider Who Was Injured After Alleged Assault)
