Lieutenant General Nicholas Pope has slapped down Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn for telling Parliament that he supported Labour’s Troubles Bill. Nine four-star generals have already called it a “direct threat to national security”…
Last month in the Commons, Benn claimed that Confederation of Service Charities (Cobseo) Chair Pope “welcomed the safeguards of veterans.” Pope has now fired back, saying:
“Comments previously shared with the Cobseo membership community in relation to the suggested legacy framework relating to the Troubles were technical observations made on the proposed protections prior to the Bill being laid in the House of Commons. These comments were never shared with any intention to make any kind of judgement on the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill – political or otherwise – and they offer absolutely no form of tacit approval of the Bill.”
Last week Starmer claimed he would speak to the generals concerned with the bill. Doubt…
