An Indiana lawmaker was targeted in a swatting attack just hours after President Trump bashed the state senator over Republicans’ stalled push to take up redistricting, authorities said.
Officials said the Terre Haute police received an email at about 5 p.m. Sunday that said “harm had been done to persons inside the home” of state Sen. Greg Goode.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office quickly sent deputies to conduct a wellness check at the house, but found no trouble at the residence.
“All persons were secure, safe, and unharmed. Investigation showed that this was a prank or false email (also known as ’swatting’). A false or prank call of this nature will never be acceptable,” Sheriff Derek Bell said in a statement Sunday night.
Mr. Goode, a Republican, said in his own statement that deputies rushed over after a “domestic violence emergency” was reported inside the home.
“While this entire incident is unfortunate and reflective of the volatile nature of our current political environment, I give thanks to God that my family and I are OK,” the senator said.
The sheriff said federal authorities are helping to investigate who was behind the swatting attack.
Both Mr. Goode and Senate President Pro Tempore Rod Bray were skewered by President Trump in a Truth Social post earlier Sunday in which the president called for them to be primaried over their supposed disinterest in redistricting.
“Because of these two politically correct type ’gentlemen,’ and a few others, they could be depriving Republicans of a Majority in the House, a very big deal!,” the president said. “California is trying to pick up five seats, and no one is complaining about that. It’s weak ’Republicans’ that cause our Country such problems – It’s why we have crazy Policies and Ideas that are so bad for America.”
Mr. Goode has not shared publicly his opinion on redistricting, but did hold a town hall meeting this month to gauge what his constituents thought about the effort. More than 70 people said they opposed redistricting, with no one speaking out in favor of it.
The president’s lengthy post also took aim at Republican Gov. Mike Braun for not whipping votes on the redistricting effort that has become an arms race between the two parties.
Mr. Braun took to X on Monday to point the finger at the Indiana State Senate for “hiding behind closed doors and refusing to even bring redistricting to a vote.”
Indiana currently holds a 7-2 split between Republican and Democratic congressmen in the U.S. House. The Trump administration wants the legislature to wipe out the Democratic districts, similar to how some blue states are trying to eliminate Republican seats.
Mr. Trump has made his case to Hoosier state lawmakers in calls and during White House visits, while Vice President J.D. Vance made two trips to Indianapolis in recent months to pitch the legislature on using its Republican supermajority to bolster the number of congressional seats.
But the overtures have not resonated with several Indiana Republicans, who have argued it is either politically irresponsible or just bad form.
States typically redraw congressional maps after the census is taken each decade. At the urging of Mr. Trump, Texas decided to redo its map this summer to add to the Republican’s slim 219-214 majority in the House by as many as five seats.
Red states such as Ohio, Missouri and North Carolina have done the same, creating nine additional seats. But California voters approved a ballot initiative this month that will likely scratch out five seats perennially held by Republicans.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, has also joined the fight to remove the state’s last remaining Republican seat, which is held by influential Rep. Andy Harris.
State Senate leaders in Maryland did not want to take up the cause, fearing a legal challenge to the redrawn maps could backfire and see Democrats losing congressional seats they already have locked down.
