Democrat Rep Invites Marjorie Taylor Greene To Switch Parties In Bizarre ‘Vast Tent’ Pitch

Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin said on Sunday that his party has “room” for Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to make the switch.

Raskin, the lead Democrat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, pitched his party as a “vast tent” in making the case for the arch-conservative Georgia lawmaker to jump ship, during a passionate speech at the “Blue Bash Brunch,” a south Florida fundraiser hosted by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party. The Maryland congressman went on to imply that Democrats are the real “conservative” party and Republicans are instead “authoritarians.”

“We are a big tent,” Raskin said in remarks referring to the Democratic Party. “We must be a huge, vast tent. I say that this is the party that’s got room for Marjorie Taylor Greene if she wants to come over. We got room for anybody who wants to stand up for the Constitution and for the Bill of Rights today.” (RELATED: Jamie Raskin Paints Rosy Picture Of ‘No Kings’ Protests, Ignores Death Threats Against Trump, Stephen Miller)

The Democratic lawmaker went on to discuss a conversation he once had with Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, whom he served with in the House with for a single term.

“Gowdy, he said to me on the way out, he said, ‘Raskin, you’re not a bad guy. The problem with you is that you’re a liberal,’” the Democratic lawmaker recounted.

Raskin said that he replied to Gowdy, “You’re damn right I’m a liberal. The heart of that word is ‘liberty.’ And I’m a progressive because the heart of that word is ‘progress.’”

“But my favorite thing to call myself today is a conservative because I want to conserve the land, the air, the water, the climate system, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act,” Raskin said, with his voice increasing in volume.

“The Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, the National Labor Relations Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Voting Rights Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act,” Raskin continued listing things he said he wanted to “conserve,” mentioning the Voting Rights Act twice. “Everything that party of authoritarians wants to destroy is everything we’re going to conserve and defend in America. We are the party of conservatives, the liberals and the progressives, all of the patriots today are in the party of democracy.”

Raskin notably served as the lead House impeachment manager during President Donald Trump’s second impeachment in 2021. Before rising to the top Democratic spot on the Judiciary Committee in January, he previously served a single term as the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee.

Trump in a Friday post to Truth Social announced he would not support Greene for reelection in 2026. He called her “wacky,” a “ranting Lunatic,” and said she had “gone Far Left,” pointing to her recent appearance on ABC’s “The View.”

“I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support,” the president added in his post.

The following day, Trump continued taking aim at the congresswoman, who was until this year widely regarded as one of his most steadfast allies.

“Lightweight Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Brown (Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!), betrayed the entire Republican Party when she turned Left, performed poorly on the pathetic View, and became the RINO [Republican in name only] that we all know she always was,” Trump wrote in a Saturday Truth Social post.

During a Sunday interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Greene, who represents a heavily Republican district in northwest Georgia, said she still supported Trump and his administration despite the president withdrawing his support for her. However, in the same interview, she blasted the Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and his decision to meet the Syrian president, a former al-Qaeda commander, on the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Greene is a former member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, which booted her from its ranks in 2023.
