We have always accepted that America’s biggest cities are liberal, awash with white-collar professionals who vote blue and believe that “gender is a construct.” At the same time, we have accepted that America’s interior and individual states’ rural counties are more socially conservative and religious than urban areas.
However, the differences between a place like New York City, say, of the early 2000s, and a rural county in the deep South were actually more modest than today. It was not too long ago that New York City elected a conservative mayor, Rudy Giuliani, followed by a moderate technocrat, Mike Bloomberg. (Subscribe to MR. RIGHT, a free weekly newsletter about modern masculinity)
That has changed. The gulf has never been wider. In 2026, just two decades later, New York will be governed by a far-left socialist, Zohran Mamdani.
Another American city, albeit a much smaller one, is undergoing an equally stark political and demographic change. In 2023, Dearborn, Michigan, became the first U.S. city where people of Middle Eastern or North African descent made up the majority of the population. It is also now home to the largest mosque in North America.
Conservative Christians and critics of Islam often point to European countries, such as France, as harbingers of what is to come. Matt Walsh, for example, has repeatedly warned that Muslims will “Islamize our cities,” pointing to Dearborn’s current social unrest as evidence. Yes I’ve said many times that conservatives are people who want to conserve western civilization. Anyone working to undermine it (through, for example, the third world Islamic invasion of the west) is not conservative and not “on the right” in any sense that matters. Matt Walsh says we must not allow Muslims to take over America
“We are allowed to take control of our own country. We’re allowed to say, no, you’re not going to Islamize our cities. No, you’re not going to do that. This is America”

Walsh is correct in stating the obvious: there are a lot of Muslims in Dearborn. But he’s dead wrong about what that means for the future of the country.
America is far too culturally diverse for Islam to “take over.” We are not the same nation as France, or any other European welfare state that has flung open its doors to Muslim immigrants. We are also too big geographically.
Walsh also assumes that future generations of American Muslims will be extremely dogmatic. I think Islam will likely go the way of Christianity and Catholicism. Future generations will become more secular, and those that are religious won’t strictly adhere to their faith, nor attempt to convert others.

Ultimately, Dearborn is not a harbinger of national Islamic takeover; it’s a harbinger of something quite the opposite: American balkanization.
Think of the dynamics going on there. The more Muslims and those of Middle Eastern descent who settle down in Dearborn, the more will join them. The population has a magnetic effect, an amplifying effect, that will draw in similar people. It’s no different than when conservatives leave blue urban areas for red rural counties, or vice versa, when liberals and progressives leave red rural counties for blue inner cities. Take New York City. In New York, more conservatives will continue to flee due to Zohran Mamdani’s administration; meanwhile, the young professionals and college graduates, inclined toward socialism and Mamdani’s politics, will move there with great excitement.
These political, cultural, and religious divides between the rural and the urban are only growing wider. But there will be no national Sharia Law. Women won’t be forced to wear burkas. Neither will the opposite happen. America won’t turn into a Christian Nationalist state where women are forced to dress like nuns. Walsh’s hysteria over an Islamic takeover is almost akin to a liberal feminist fever dream that America will turn into the world of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
I see a future, though, in which we will never reconcile our political, cultural, and religious differences. Cities will be much more blue; rural counties will be much more red. There will be no more national unity and pride in being American; we will all splinter off into newly formed city-states. There won’t be Sharia tyranny; there will be secular anarchy — for most of us, at least — while sectarian strife devours religious groups. A complete breakdown of public safety and infrastructure failure. The very rich congregating in gated enclaves, towns, and entire small cities, with their own private security, while everyone else lives outside, surveilled by AI drones.
This is the dystopia I worry about. Not religious tyranny, but anarchy, fueled by divisions we cannot mend.
