President Donald Trump gave Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani the green light to admit he called him a “fascist” during a Friday meeting inside the Oval Office.
Trump and Mamdani engaged in a friendly discussion where the president appeared optimistic that they would work together on critical issues for New York. When Mamdani fielded a question on whether he believes Trump is a “fascist,” the president ran cover for Mamdani by saying he is welcome to believe it.
“[The New York Post’s Steven Nelson] asked about your comment calling the president a fascist, and your answer was, ‘both President Trump and I have been clear about our positions and our views.’ Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?” Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich asked. As Mamdani began to answer, Trump said, “That’s okay, you can just say yes. Okay. That’s easier. It’s easier than explaining it, I don’t mind.”

Trump told the reporters that he and Mamdani agreed on more issues than they thought, particularly on the affordability crisis and crime. Mamdani added that New Yorkers who voted for Trump told him that the cost of living was their biggest concern and he looks forward to partnering with the president to bring down costs.
The president further added that he believes Mamdani has the chance to “really do something great for New York” and that he expects to be helping him.
Mamdani campaigned on opposing Trump’s agenda and named his tour, “The Five Boroughs Against Trump,” after he earned the nomination for mayor. Trump repeatedly referred to Mamdani as a “communist” and even threatened to arrest him if he followed through with his threats to interfere with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
The mayor-elect has promised to implement government-run grocery stores and buses, a $30 minimum wage, rent freezes and an agency that intends to dispatch social workers over police to address non-violent 911 calls. During a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference in 2021, Mamdani stated that the end goal of socialism is “seizing the means of production.”
Mamdani received endorsements from independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, both of whom are self-professed democratic socialists.
