Translation costs at the Ministry of Justice are on course to more than double within five years, according to the government’s own figures. In 2021-22 – during the pandemic – taxpayers shelled out £22.2 million on interpreters and £51,231 on translators in the court system. Last year, that jumped to £32.4 million for interpreters and £78,995 for translators. The numbers are ballooning for this year…
So far in the 2025-26 financial year, spending on interpreters has already hit £20.5 million – and we’re only halfway through the year. At that rate, interpreter costs will hit £35.2 million and translators will cost will £135,420. A 164% increase for translators since 2021…
The MoJ insists:
“The Ministry of Justice has a statutory duty to provide Language Services to enable access to justice for users whom English is not their first language. Language Service needs and spend are assessed to ensure these services offer good value for money for taxpayers whilst maintaining high standards of service delivery.”
The total spend on interpretation and translation services since 2021 is £133.5 million. Mon dieu…
