A naval officer, aged 47 years old, passed away Saturday after jumping into treacherous Pacific Ocean waters off Hawaii to save two children who were battling high surf, according to the Kauaʻi Police Department.
Originally from Florida, Master-at-Arms First Class Jeffrey Diaz was stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands. He bravely entered the life-threatening ocean waters around Waiapua‘a Bay on Kauaʻi to rescue the two children. Ocean Safety Bureau and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department personnel responded to the scene, recovered Diaz from the ocean and started lifesaving efforts.
The naval officer was sent to Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
A man died after being pulled from the waters off Waiapua‘a Bay on Saturday afternoon. The individual had entered the water to assist children who were struggling in high surf. Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, he was later pronounced dead.

“We are heartbroken by the passing of our shipman and friend, MA1 First Class Jeffrey Diaz and extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and shipmen who are grieving,” stated Capt. Robert Prince, the Pacific Missile Range Facility’s commanding officer, per Hawaii News Now.
“We are grateful to the emergency responders, sailors and their families who provided immediate assistance, and we remain committed to supporting his family and those affected as we navigate this difficult time together.”
