Pharmaceutical Comapny Recalls 41,000 Bottles Of Nasal Medication Amid Cold Season

A Philadelphia-based manufacturer pulled more than 41,000 bottles of Walgreens saline nasal spray from shelves after tests found bacterial contamination in the product.

Medical Products Laboratories Inc. launched the voluntary recall on Nov. 12 after discovering Pseudomonas lactis in its Walgreens Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol, WKRC reported. The bacteria can threaten people with weakened immune systems or compromised respiratory health. The Food and Drug Administration classified the action as Class II, indicating the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems. The agency noted serious harm remains unlikely, according to the outlet.

Two lot numbers fall under the recall: 71409 with a Feb. 28, 2027 expiration date, and 71861 expiring Aug. 31, 2027. Both appear on the 1.5-ounce bottle packaging. The affected spray carries the National Drug Code 0363-3114-01.

Walgreens stores distributed the contaminated products across the country. The company has contacted customers through letters as the recall continues.

The timing poses challenges for consumers stocking up on cold and flu remedies. Saline nasal sprays remain popular during winter months for relieving congestion and keeping nasal passages moist.

Health officials urge anyone who purchased the affected nasal spray to stop using it immediately. Customers can return the product to their local Walgreens for a refund.
