The OBR said there was no explanation for where central funding for special needs schooling will come from now that the government is picking up some responsibility for its funding. There is a £6 billion gap by 20228/29 which DfE will have to cover. If that comes out of the schools budget then you are looking at a huge 4.9% squeeze…
The government is saying reforms to SEND provision can cover the costs, but won’t explain how and whether the quality of provision will decline. A Downing Street spokesman said just now that “any changes we make in future will improve support for young people” and reforms will be set out “in full in the schools white paper early next year.” And could not categorically rule out larger class sizes…
The white paper has already been delayed and strikes are on the horizon over the funding and reforms. Labour backbench rebellion incoming – it could be welfare all over again…
