Three Teens Charged With Murdering Man Who Escaped 9/11 Terror Attack

Three teenage boys were charged November 20 in Jacksonville, Florida with the murder of a 64-year-old man who “narrowly escaped death” during 9/11, according to reports.

The suspects, ages 13, 16 and 19, were arrested in the death of Long Island native and former World Trade Center worker Roger Borkum, according to a statement from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Responding to an aggravated battery call October 19, officers found a “severely beaten” Borkum, who was taken to the hospital before dying from his injuries four days later, the statement said. Borkum was found lying on the ground near the doorway in a small recessed area of a building with injuries to his head, according to court records.

Following the description of a witness and an investigation by county investigators with the State Attorney’s Office, suspects were identified as 13-year-old Justin Curry, 16-year-old Robert Pope and 19-year-old Marcavion Lacey, with the youngest being 12 at the time of the attack, according to the statement.

“All three teens are charged with murder,” the statement said.

The three teenagers were found near the scene, arrested for aggravated battery and were also “involved in a robbery a few minutes after the battery,” according to court records.

Borkum was fired from his consulting job on the 77th floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center in late July 2001. Still, many of his coworkers were killed during the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, according to his obituary.

Borkum’s wife, Celeste, died during a humanitarian trip to Africa, the obituary read.

Borkum loved reading philosophical works and discovered practices of corruption happening in a multinational bank he consulted for before the 2008 recession, according to the obituary.
