Civil Service insiders are growing increasingly vocal over the leftie consensus infecting the Treasury, with the negative reaction to the Winter Budget raising eyebrows amongst Whitehall mandarins who’ve never met a tax they don’t fancy. According to Guido’s sources, the “ongoing obsequiousness” towards Reeves is causing serious problems:
“Most people are clueless, don’t want to know, or are surprised she gets so much hate. The levels of illiteracy around government are genuinely outstanding… There’s often an effort not to share information that actually matters.”
The Observer reported over the weekend that an “alliance” between Treasury officials and left-wing ideologues explains much of the chaos:
“When the Tories were in power, they pushed against that but now the ideologues in the Labour party say: ‘Great, let’s do it and more.’ There’s a hostility to wealth.”
Another Whitehall source says they spent the day after the Budget explaining what the OBR is actually supposed to do (other than make the Guido newsroom happy), and that many civil servants did not consider Reeves’ income tax threshold freeze a problem. They added: “the people who understand what’s going on is generally extremely limited across government“. When Reeves arrived in the Treasury in July last year, she was clapped in like Taylor Swift had turned up…
