Driver Rescued After Truck Left Dangling Off West Virginia Highway Bridge During Heavy Snowfall

A truck driver narrowly escaped death in a dramatic rescue after their big rig skidded off a snow-covered West Virginia highway, leaving the cab dangling 100 feet above the ground from a bridge.

Around 6:25 a.m., Hurricane Fire Department crews were called to a crash on Mason County’s U.S. Route 35 — and they quickly realized this was no ordinary wreck. (RELATED: Northeast Will Be Colder Than Literally Anywhere Else On Earth, Climatologist Warns)

When they arrived on the scene, rescuers were met with a heart-stopping sight: a massive tractor trailer’s cab hanging precariously over the edge of a bridge, and with the terrified driver still trapped inside.

A team of local first responders rushed to U.S. Route 35, where stunned witnesses looked on and recorded dramatic video of the tractor trailer hanging off the bridge, held from plummeting only by the weight of its cargo.

On scene, the coordinated team of local first responders swiftly shut down the highway and launched a high-stakes rescue, positioning fire engines and emergency vehicles to extract the driver from the brink of disaster.

According to the first responders, technicians from multiple agencies rigged three separate rope systems utilizing two heavy wreckers. One was anchored to the bridge itself while the second was used to stabilize the dangling cab, creating a critical lifeline that kept the truck from plunging to the ground.
