The number of Cabinet Staff assigned to cover the “comprehensive” review of quangos in government is only three. Big job…
In April Pat McFadden, then Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster prior to his demotion, announced the review:
“Every quango across government will be reviewed, with a view to close, merge or bring functions back into departments if its continued existence cannot be justified.
The review, commissioned by the Cabinet Office at the request of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, is the latest move to re-wire Whitehall and produce a more productive and agile state.”
Now the Cabinet Office tells Guido’s FOI Unit that “the number of staff working on this review in the Cabinet Office is 3 Full Time Equivalent.” Despite disagreement over definitions there are roughly 559 quangos in operation right now. That means the three plucky staff have to review 186 each…
Departments are sending along their own recommendations for quangos under their umbrella. So far efforts to close ALBs like NHS England have seen sluggish progress – and that’s after their abolition is announced…
The latest line from Labour as of September is that “the review is ongoing, and outcomes will be communicated in due course.” Could speed it along by hiring staff above single digits…
