Tony Dokoupil is poised to take over the “CBS Evening News,” an elevation reportedly backed by Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski, according to the New York Post.
The move continues Weiss’s overhaul of CBS News and would shift Dokoupil from “CBS Mornings” to the flagship broadcast. The decision is linked to a broader shake-up under Weiss; Paramount previously announced Weiss’s new role and partnership with Cibrowski, the outlet reported. “[He] did a great job,” top CBS shareholder Shari Redstone said in 2024, The Washington Post reported, after Dokoupil’s combative interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates — a segment that led to internal second-guessing by CBS brass but showcased the aggressive on-air style that has defined Dokoupil.
Dokoupil also drew headlines this spring while interviewing Bill Belichick for “CBS Sunday Morning,” pressing into the former Patriots coach’s relationship with Jordon Hudson before the exchange turned awkward — an on-camera moment covered by CBS and trade press.
The pending anchor choice comes as Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson exit the program in December, creating an opening for a single host after a short multi-anchor experiment, the Post reported.
Weiss has signaled a more hard-edged newsroom since arriving this fall; The Wall Street Journal noted Tuesday she and Cibrowski announced ABC veteran Matt Gutman as a new chief correspondent and indicated Dokoupil is in line for the evening chair.
CBS did not immediately post an official announcement Tuesday. The Post reported the network “has picked” Dokoupil, while the Journal framed his promotion as expected but not yet finalized.
