Despite an increasingly hysterical campaign by self-styled ‘millionaires’ to levy a wealth tax this year has seen a miserable decline in voluntary tax payments to the Treasury. Are you surprised?
The Patriotic Millionaires group, which includes Gary Stevenson, is a prominent campaigner for a 2% annual wealth tax on assets over £10 million. They have been touring the country with a bus that says “Tax us, the super rich. Proud to pay, here to stay.” Apparently not proud to pay with anything more valuable than monopoly money, though…
Information obtained by Guido’s FOI Unit shows that in 2025 – until 13 November – £88,557.48 was paid in voluntary tax to the Treasury as a donation in general towards public expenditure from 45 donors. Were that rate to continue for the rest of the year HMT would take in only £101,966.81…
That is a significant drop from last 2024’s sum – which Guido’s FOI Unit has also found was £625,177.95, from 27 donors. Still low…
Deborah Meaden has supported the Patriotic Millionaires’ wealth tax proposals. With net wealth of around £50 million, were Meaden to have donated the entire £101,000, the figure would have represented 0.204% of her wealth…
Patriotic Millionaires’ various tax hike proposals are claimed to raise £52.1 billion. This year’s voluntary contributions will be 0.0001957% of that. Can’t put their money where their mouths are?
