Florida Man Arrested, Said He Had a ‘Dirty Bomb’ in His Truck [WATCH]

Police in central Florida responded to a vehicle crash late Friday night and encountered a driver who warned them that he had a “dirty bomb,” prompting a lockdown and a multi-agency investigation, according to officials.

The Haines City Police Department reported that officers were dispatched to a Publix grocery store in Davenport following calls about a car accident.

When officers arrived, they made contact with 43-year-old Benjamin Donald Johnson, who was allegedly involved in the crash.

Police said in a statement that officers attempted to speak with Johnson but ultimately had to remove him physically from his truck.

“Officers were ultimately required to physically remove Johnson from the truck, at which point multiple firearms were observed in plain view,” the statement read.

While Johnson was detained in the back of a patrol vehicle, police said an officer overheard him claim that a “dirty bomb” was inside his Chevrolet Silverado.

Officers then searched the truck and found a yellow plastic container secured with chains and locks and marked with a radioactive warning label.

Police stated, “Officers located a yellow plastic container secured with chains and locks with a radioactive warning label and immediately repositioned to a safe distance, shut down roadways, and requested assistance from the Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives.”

Authorities imposed a temporary lockdown of the surrounding area for several hours “out of an abundance of caution” and to “ensure the safety” of anyone nearby.

Before the bomb squad arrived, a Florida State Fire Investigator at the scene confirmed that the container was “emitting positive radioactivity,” according to police.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; the Florida Department of Law Enforcement; and an FBI bomb technician began an investigation.

Police said investigators determined that the device inside the container was a moisture density gauge commonly used for soil testing.

The device contained less radioactivity than a medical X-ray, according to the findings.

The container was transported to the Haines City Police Department for additional examination by the Florida Bureau of Radioactive Material.

Officers conducted a full search of Johnson’s vehicle following the initial discovery.

Police said they located a “multitude of firearms and ammunition, firearm magazine speed loaders, thermal scopes, knives, a battering ram, night vision goggles, cannabis, and gummies, which tested positive for THC.”

Johnson told investigators he was in the area for work and had been living out of his truck with his dog.

Police arranged for the dog to be transferred to a local animal control service.

According to Polk County Sheriff’s Office jail records, Johnson was arrested and charged with hoax weapon of mass destruction, false report concerning a bomb or explosive, resisting an officer without violence, unlawful possession of cannabis resin, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol.

Haines City police noted that Johnson’s prior criminal history included an arrest for possession of marijuana in Tennessee.

The case remains under investigation.
