With small boat crossings under Labour hitting all-time-highs this year, you’d think the government would be scrambling to get UK border security back on track. Not so much. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office joyfully announced yesterday:
“[A new] project, which is being delivered by Home Office International Operations, is designed to identify safeguarding opportunities and support early intervention of criminals at Pakistan’s borders to disrupt journeys and detect abuse. By giving front line officers expertise in spotting potentially vulnerable people and illegal activity early, this enables them to protect innocent victims and apprehend those trying to escape justice by making their way to other countries, including the UK… UK provided state of the art security scanners, [are] helping to disrupt the movement of illegal and dangerous items across the region.”
Oddly the UK ODA budget (foreign aid spending) in Pakistan shot up from £41.54 million in 2023/4 to an estimated £133 million in 2024/5. Securing Pakistan’s borders might be helpful for Britain a small amount of the time, but billing the UK taxpayer for training and equipment with an essentially open border in the Channel seems like the wrong priority. What about giving Border Force an extra hundred million for Channel border control instead?
