Ford is ditching its fully electric pickup trucks and adding gas generators to its EVs, giving former President Joe Biden’s failed green energy buildout yet another kick in the scrotum.
On Monday, Ford announced it had ended its production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning. Ford is now introducing an “extended range electric vehicle” variant of the F-150 Lightning, which features a gasoline-powered generator capable of extending the truck’s battery range by 700 miles, according to a report. The release date for the new vehicle remains unknown.
“Rather than spending billions more on large EVs that now have no path to profitability, we are allocating that money into higher returning areas, more trucks and van hybrids, extended range electric vehicles, affordable EVs and entirely new opportunities like energy storage,” Ford president Andrew Frick recently told reporters. The sucker was also expensive, and no American wanted to be a sucker paying $60,000 for a cheap-looking EV. Americans love their gas-powered vehicles, and no matter how many tax credits and government subsidies were thrown at the budding EV industry, the Biden administration couldn’t artificially manufacture demand.
Adding the gas-powered generator also doesn’t make much sense. But at least it’s a step in the right direction. If anything, Ford should focus on making smaller, affordable, gas-powered trucks, like the old school Ford Rangers. Those would sell like hot cakes.
