President Trump announced he’ll address the nation in a live speech from the White House Wednesday night, his first live prime-time remarks in nearly six months.
“I will be giving an address to the nation [Wednesday] night, live from the White House at 9 pm EST. I look forward to ’seeing you’ then. It has been a great year for our country and the best is yet to come,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president will discuss his accomplishments over the past year and outline what he plans to do over the next three years.
“He’s going to talk a lot about the accomplishments over the past 11 months, all that he’s done to bring our country back to greatness and all that he continues to plan to do to continue delivering for the American people over the next three years.”
The last time Mr. Trump delivered a live prime-time speech was on June 21, when he addressed the nation following U.S. military strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran.
Mr. Trump’s last address to the nation was on Nov. 26 after two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in Washington, just blocks from the White House. The president, who was in Florida at the time, taped the address and released it in the afternoon.
He also released a taped Oval Office address on Sept. 10 after the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
During his first term, Mr. Trump delivered three live addresses from the Oval Office, none of them at the end of a calendar year.
Prime-time addresses to the nation used to be a longtime staple of the presidency during the television age, but Mr. Trump and his predecessor, President Biden, rarely delivered such dramatic remarks.
Mr. Biden only delivered five prime-time speeches during his presidency, including one in July 2024 asking Americans to lower the political temperature after an assassin tried to kill Mr. Trump, and a January 2025 farewell address to the nation.
Heading into what’s expected to be a bruising midterm fight next year, Mr. Trump and other administration officials have been working to highlight his record. Mr. Trump traveled to Pennsylvania last week to tout his economic policies. Vice President JD Vance was also in Pennsylvania on Tuesday to promote the administration’s agenda.
That effort comes as multiple red flags have popped up in polls for Mr. Trump, especially about his handling of the economy. An NBC News poll released Sunday found that 42% of voters have a negative view of the economy, while an AP-NORC poll last week found 31% of Americans approve of Mr. Trump’s handling of the economy. That’s down from 40% in March and the lowest mark of his two terms.
