Nancy Pelosi Says Democrats Can’t Just Impeach Trump Because They Want To [WATCH]

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said there is currently no justification to pursue a third impeachment of President Donald Trump, even if Democrats were to regain control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, as reported by Fox News.

Pelosi made the remarks during an interview with USA Today’s Susan Page that was released Saturday. Page asked whether impeachment should again be part of the Democratic Party’s agenda should House control shift.

“The person most responsible for impeaching President Trump when I was speaker was President Trump,” Pelosi said.

“He gave us no choice. He crossed the line in his telephone call with President Zelenskyy as one manifestation of his disrespect for the Constitution, his jeopardizing the sanctity of our own elections in our country, and the rest.”

Pelosi presided over both impeachment proceedings against President Trump during his first term.

The first impeachment in 2019 stemmed from Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while the second followed the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. In both cases, the U.S. Senate voted to acquit Trump.

Pelosi continued addressing the prior impeachments during the interview, referencing the events surrounding January 6.

“And then, of course, January 6th. He can try to change the narrative all he wants, but we will be there to make sure the public knows the truth about January 6th. It was an insurrection incited by the President of the United States,” she said.

As the interview continued, Page asked Pelosi to clarify whether she believed impeachment should again be considered in the future.

Pelosi responded by emphasizing that impeachment, in her view, requires a specific threshold to be met.

“If he crosses the border again,” Pelosi said. “But that’s not an incidental thing. You say, ‘We’re going to do that.’ No, there has to be cause. There has to be reason. We had review. This was a very serious, historic thing.”

Pelosi’s comments come amid renewed but unsuccessful efforts by some Democrats to revive impeachment proceedings against Trump during his second term as President of the United States.

Over the past year, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, has introduced multiple articles of impeachment targeting Trump.

Green has repeatedly argued that Trump’s conduct warrants removal from office, despite Democrats not holding a majority in the House.

Most recently, Green attempted to force a vote Wednesday night on two articles of impeachment using a privileged resolution, a procedural tool that allows lawmakers to bring a measure to the House floor within two legislative days.

The effort was defeated Thursday when 23 House Democrats joined Republicans in voting against the resolution.

The failed vote highlighted divisions within the Democratic caucus over impeachment strategy and whether continued impeachment efforts resonate with voters ahead of the 2026 elections.

Pelosi’s remarks suggested caution, signaling that impeachment should not be pursued without what she described as clear cause.

While Pelosi remains a prominent voice within the Democratic Party, she no longer holds a formal leadership role in the House.

Her comments nonetheless reflect ongoing debate among Democrats about how to confront Trump during his current term in office.
