Nick Reiner Reportedly Makes First Court Appearance Wearing Anti-Suicide Smock

Nick Reiner appeared in court Wednesday donning a suicide prevention smock and shackles, charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.

The 32-year-old appeared behind the glass wall of a custody area, according to CBC. His parents were found dead inside their Brentwood, California, home. Nick was not medically cleared to appear in court Tuesday, the originally scheduled date. His arraignment was postponed to Jan. 7 at his lawyer’s request, the outlet reported. He did not enter a plea and spoke only to say “yes, your honor” when agreeing to the new date.

“Their loss is beyond tragic,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, according to CBC. “We will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice.”

Prosecutors added special circumstances of multiple murders and alleged that Nick used a dangerous weapon — a knife. Hochman said his office has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

“This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones but for our entire city,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell reportedly said.

Nick was arrested in the city’s Exposition Park area, near the University of Southern California, about 14 miles from the crime scene. He was denied bail during Wednesday’s court appearance, according to the Los Angeles Times.
