Mauritius Attorney General Gavin Glover has issued a communique attacking the House of Lords survey on the views and wishes of Chagossians. Another twist in the diplomatic conflict started by Starmer’s botched Chagos deal…
The Lords report, published this week, provides a summary of the responses it has received from Chagossian participants – and is as expected:
“A recurring theme in the evidence submitted to the Committee was a mistrust of the Mauritian government and a belief that the Chagossian people will not benefit under future Mauritian administration. This view was especially salient amongst respondents from the UK but was also noticeable amongst submissions from Mauritius and the Seychelles… Participants in our roundtable articulated unanimous criticism of the level of engagement from both the Mauritian and UK Government throughout the Agreement’s negotiation process.”
Now the Mauritian administration has shot back with a statement carrying a list of criticisms of the survey and its “methodological limitations”. Starmer’s deal is not only hated by British taxpayers but is also causing the UK to fall out with everyone…
A particular issue raised in the report is Chagossian opposition to Starmer’s proposed ‘trust fund’ for financial support: “A central finding from the survey is the community’s consistent preference for financial support to be given directly to Chagossians, rather than the establishment of a government-managed trust fund.” Starmer surely won’t let Mauritius manage a £40 million fund of UK taxpayer’s money, will he?
