North Carolina Football Makes Power Move By Hiring Bobby Petrino As Offensive Coordinator: REPORT

Clearly, Bill Belichick isn’t playing around.

According to reports from On3’s Chris Low, Pete Nakos and Inside Carolina, Bobby Petrino is set to join Bill Belichick’s staff as the new offensive coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels. This hiring follows the program’s decision to part ways with Freddie Kitchens earlier in December after his single season in the role. In 2025, North Carolina struggled with one of the least effective offenses in the FBS. The team placed 119th nationally in scoring offense, averaging just 19.3 points per game, while ranking 129th in total yards with 288.8 per contest. Petrino now faces the task of revitalizing that unit.

Although Belichick and Petrino lack a prior connection, Petrino maintains relationships with members of the existing North Carolina coaching staff. Throughout his career, Petrino has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to revitalize struggling offenses. The former skipper at Louisville and Arkansas also brings experience leading an NFL team, having served in that capacity for the Atlanta Falcons for one season.

I personally like the move by Bill Belichick & Co. Say what you want about his first season at the helm, but to his credit, he’s obviously trying to right the wrongs. And honestly, can we say his first year was truly bad when compared to the Sherrone Moore story?

I’m willing to give Bill another chance after all that nonsense, and with Petrino at that … interesting times ahead in Chapel Hill.
