5 Times Bill Maher Broke With Democrats In 2025

Despite identifying as a liberal, comedian Bill Maher repeatedly criticized the Democratic Party throughout 2025.

Maher said on a June 22 episode of his “Club Random” podcast that while he is not a Democrat, he consistently votes for the party based on his view that Democrats “are less scary and insane than the Republicans.” Over the course of the year, however, Maher denounced the party’s attitude and policy. 1. Bill Maher Says His Dinner With Trump Showed ‘Why The Democrats Are So Unpopular’

WATCH:

Maher attended a dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump in March and described it on “Real Time with Bill Maher” on April 11. The comedian called Trump a “possible friend” and said the experience illustrated why Americans disliked the Democratic Party.

“Honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,” Maher asserted during his report on the experience. “That’s just how it went down, make of it what you will. Me, I feel it’s emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days.”

Maher’s dinner with Trump prompted “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator Larry David to write an April 21 satirical New York Times op-ed, titled “My Dinner With Adolf,” wherein “a vocal critic” of Hitler had a friendly and cordial meeting with the Nazi dictator. Maher said during a Monday interview with The Free Press that his friendship with David was over after repeatedly firing back at him over his op-ed and not speaking to him since its publication.

2. ‘It’s So Ridiculous’: Bill Maher And Charlie Kirk Torch Dems Over Wildly Unpopular Stance On Trans Athletes

WATCH:

Maher hosted Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on an April 20 “Club Random” episode, just months before his Sept. 10 assassination. During the podcast, both argued that Democrats would continue losing elections if they refused to reject biological males competing in female sports.

“Of all the low-lying fruit that the Democrats just like hand the Republicans to win elections, that’s the one,” Maher said after Kirk praised him for recognizing differences between males and females.

“It’s so funny — I joked around with my team the other day,” Kirk responded. “I said, ‘Are they really going to just let us win every national election on this no men in female sports thing?’ Like, they can’t surrender on this one issue.”

A January New York Times/Ipsos poll found that about 80% of Americans felt that biological males shouldn’t be permitted to participate in women’s sports.

“It’s so ridiculous,” Maher said.

Maher emotionally reacted to Kirk’s assassination on a Sept. 15 “Club Random” episode.

“Charlie Kirk and I certainly don’t agree on much politically,” the comedian said. “But he sat here, he’s a human being, he’s not a monster … I liked him.”

3. ‘Get The F*ck Off Of Me’: Bill Maher Says It’s Become ‘Less Dangerous’ To Tell ‘Truth’ Under Trump Than Biden

WATCH:

Moreover, Maher told actress Drew Barrymore on an Aug. 11 episode of “Club Random” that it had become safer to speak candidly under Trump than former President Joe Biden.

“It’s slightly less dangerous than it was two years ago because we did have a vibe change. And because the Democrats lost so badly in 2024,” Maher said. “The blush is off the rose on left-wing censorship and, ‘Oh my god, you can’t say that.’ Stop telling me what I can do, what I can say, what I can think, who my heroes are supposed to be. Just get the fuck off of me.”

4. Bill Maher, Cheryl Hines Rail Against Democrats Over ‘How Mean’ They Are

WATCH:

Maher and actress Cheryl Hines, who is married to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., also condemned the Democratic Party for becoming increasingly hostile on a Nov. 10 episode of “Club Random.”

“The Republicans have been very kind to me from the beginning. Even from the beginning, when Bobby was running as a Democrat, they weren’t mean,” Hines said. “And they never have been. And I can’t say that for the Democrats.”

“I agree. And it’s sad because it’s not the Democrats we grew up with. And that’s the difference that people don’t, I think, see. They’re like, ‘Why did you turn on the Democrats?’ Well, first of all, I didn’t. Like I said, we voted for the same person,” Maher replied. “But I’m not going to pretend I don’t notice how different they are. How mean they’ve become.”

5. Bill Maher Spars With Patton Oswalt Over Whether ‘Democrats Have Gone Too Far Left’

WATCH:

Furthermore, Maher clashed with actor-comedian Patton Oswalt on a Nov. 17 episode of “Club Random” about whether the Democratic Party had become excessively left-wing in recent years. They particularly sparred over whether the left had remained “scientific.”

“We stopped being a scientific people,” Maher said. Oswalt disagreed, claiming “the left certainly stayed scientific.”

“No, they didn’t! … they think gender bullshit that they went way too far with,” Maher said. “That’s not scientific.”
