Democrats’ supposed savior placed an op-ed in Fox News Friday, hitting President Donald Trump where it hurts: on affordability and the U.S. economy.
Abigail Spanberger, Virginia’s governor-elect, wrote a well-timed column making the case for her new administration and how they will dial in on the cost of living, which is still out of control in nearly every nook of the country. She also set the tone for a moderate approach to the second Trump administration, writing she is willing to reach across the aisle, in an attempt to appeal to Trump’s supporters. “As the next governor of Virginia, I’m ready to work with anyone, including President Donald Trump, to make life less expensive. Because high costs and the inability to retain and attract top talent to Virginia affect everyone — no matter your party affiliation, and no matter if your company has five employees or 5,000,” Spanberger wrote.

Affordability and the economy will certainly dominate the Democrats’ messaging in the next year. Polls show that Americans are rapidly losing patience with the Trump administration with regard to the economy, and they still rate the cost of living and affordability as their main concern.
A NPR/PBS News/Marist poll released Dec. 17 found that Trump’s approval rating on the economy hit a new low, with just 36% of Americans approving of Trump’s approach to the economy. Notably, 49% of Americans who live in rural areas said they disapprove of Trump’s job on the economy, while just 43% approve. And, perhaps a tiny alarm bell for the Republican Party as a whole, 37% of voters said they now trust Democrats to handle the economy, compared to 33% who said the same about Republicans.
To be fair to the administration, they seem to be fairly responsive to the bad polling numbers. On Dec. 21, White House economic director Kevin Hassett told Fox News that they will be prioritizing housing and the cost of living in 2026.
“We are going to have a plan, a big plan, to announce sometime soon in the new year that’s going to be very good news for the American people who feel like it’s not affordable to buy a home anymore,” Hassett said, noting that cabinet officials were planning to meet with Trump after Christmas to discuss policy proposals. “We have a big list of housing ideas that have been vetted very carefully by the Cabinet secretaries to present to the president in a week or two, and we will see which ones he picks.”
One hopes that these policies are actually serious, unlike the Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte’s farcical 50-year mortgage idea. (RELATED: Trump Allies Revolt Against Top Admin Official Who Gave President 50-Year Mortgage Idea)
Concerning housing, the administration has a tough political choice to make, which Trump has acknowledged. Many of Trump’s biggest supporters are older Boomers who already own homes that have drastically appreciated since COVID-19. They are banking on these nest eggs to hold their artificially high value until they choose to retire. But, of course, many young Americans looking to start families and buy their first starter home are still priced out of the market.
No matter what Trump does, though, someone will be upset. Someone will pay the price.
