Democrats will mark the fifth anniversary of the 2021 assault on the Capitol with a special hearing that focuses on election threats and new crimes committed by pardoned Jan. 6 offenders, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Monday.
Mr. Jeffries, New York Democrat, said the hearing will be led by Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Mississippi Democrat who led a House select committee on Jan. 6 under the House Democratic majority in 2021-2022.
“Nearly five years ago, a violent mob incited by Donald Trump attempted to halt the peaceful transfer of power,” Mr. Jeffries wrote in a letter to fellow Democrats. “As a result of the extraordinary bravery of the men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement professionals, the treacherous effort to prevent certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election failed.”
Mr. Trump spent the weeks following his November 2020 loss to Joseph R. Biden complaining about alleged fraud and urging states to reexamine their tallies.
He gave a fiery speech on the White House Ellipse on Jan. 6, 2021 and urged supporters to proceed to the Capitol “peacefully and patriotically.” But all hell broke loose on the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue when lawmakers attempted to begin certification of Mr. Trump’s loss to Mr. Biden.
Mr. Trump, on the first day of his second term, pardoned or commuted the sentences of over 1,000 persons convicted of offenses.
