When I get rich off sports betting, I’m totally taking part in these kinds of auctions.
Medals from the Olympic Games often appear on the auction market, though it’s uncommon for them to belong to prominent or famous athletes.
One notable exception is U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte, as three of his Olympic gold medals from relay events were sold Saturday night through Goldin Auctions for a total of $385,520, inclusive of the buyer’s premium. In 2022, Lochte had already parted with six of his Olympic medals through RR Auction, fetching a combined total of $166,000.
When combined with the results from Saturday’s auction, Lochte has now sold nine Olympic medals for $551,520.
The standout among the three was Lochte’s gold medal from the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, which sold for $183,000. Its higher value was likely boosted by its connection to Michael Phelps’ historic achievement of winning eight gold medals at those Games.
