John Harbaugh in the Big Apple? … I can dig it.
According to sources who spoke Wednesday night with ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, John Harbaugh and the New York Giants are actively working toward finalizing a contract that would install him as the franchise’s next head coach, with expectations that a deal will come together barring any last-minute complications.
While the agreement remains incomplete and discussions over contract details are ongoing, one source close to the situation described the negotiations by saying, “There still is a lot to work through.”
Sources indicate that, absent any unexpected hurdles, Harbaugh is prepared to accept the Giants‘ offer, and the team is poised to move quickly to bring him on board. (RELATED: Freezing Warning Issued As Rams-Bears Set To Be One Of Coldest Games In History With Negative 10-Degree Temperatures)
The 63-year-old Harbaugh comes off an 18-year tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, during which he compiled a 180-113 record and guided the team to a Super Bowl victory. He was dismissed by Baltimore following their failure to reach the playoffs.
The Giants have struggled significantly, posting a combined 7-27 record over the last two seasons. Harbaugh would replace Brian Daboll, who was let go in November, with Mike Kafka having served as interim head coach for the final seven contests of the season.
Harbaugh conducted an interview Monday with the Atlanta Falcons and had preliminary arrangements to speak Thursday with the Tennessee Titans. However, the Giants were the first team to host him in-person, welcoming him to their facility Wednesday morning. He remained there into the early evening prior to flying back to his home near Baltimore aboard a private jet owned by Giants co-owner Steve Tisch.
One source familiar with the meeting told ESPN that the session went “good,” with plans in place to resume discussions Thursday.
John Harbaugh and the Giants are working to finalize an agreement to make him New York’s next head coach and, barring a setback, a deal is expected, multiple sources tell ESPN.
