Jan. 30 … have your popcorn ready.
With the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics just around the corner, now is the perfect time to revisit one of the most legendary moments in American sports history through Netflix’s new documentary, “Miracle: The Boys of ’80.”
Entering the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics on American soil in New York, the Soviet Union’s hockey team had claimed gold in five of the prior six Games and came in as overwhelming favorites.
The Soviets boasted a roster filled with seasoned professionals who had competed at the highest international levels, while the United States squad — made up entirely of amateurs — was the youngest team at the Olympics.
Regardless of their inexperience, the Americans went undefeated through group play and faced the also-unbeaten Soviet team in the opening game of the medal round. Trailing 3-2 going into the third period, the U.S. rallied with two unanswered goals to seize a 4-3 advantage, ultimately pulling off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history — forever immortalized by Al Michaels’ iconic call. The Americans would go on to beat Finland in the gold-medal game, completing one of the most inspiring underdog stories, both for the Olympics and the United States.
Netflix has timed its release perfectly with the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The documentary “Miracle: The Boys of ’80” chronicles the legendary “Miracle on Ice” in rich detail.
The game unfolded against the backdrop of intense Cold War anxiety, coming shortly after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979. In the trailer, a former player likened the Soviet Union to “Darth Vader,” while another described the matchup as “the Russians with their fur coats and the American cowboys.”
“Miracle: The Boys of ’80” premieres Jan. 30 on Netflix — just one week before the 2026 Winter Olympics officially begins Feb. 6.
