‘That’s Gross’: Philadelphia DA’s Rhetoric Against ICE Too Extreme For Fetterman

Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman condemned Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner on Wednesday after the prosecutor warned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents they could be hunted down.

Krasner said outside City Hall during an event promoting newly unveiled “ICE OUT” legislation that ICE agents were “wannabe Nazis” and warned they could be “hunted” down. Asked on “The Story With Martha MacCallum” whether that rhetoric was productive, Fetterman did not hesitate to distance himself from Krasner’s comments.

“That’s gross, and I absolutely condemn that. Absolutely. Do not compare anyone to Nazis. Don’t use that kind of rhetoric. That can incite violence, and I strongly reject that and condemn that kind of language in the strongest terms. Members of ICE are not Nazis. I don’t compare anyone to Gestapo and those things.”

Fetterman said elected officials must lower tensions, not inflame them.

“This is one of the reasons why I think we should stand down in what’s happening in Minneapolis. We all have to reduce the temperature. We have to turn it down. And using that kind of rhetoric, again, I can’t ever support that, and I have a basic rule in politics,” Fetterman added. “Don’t compare anyone to Nazis. I don’t care. You just don’t do that. These are not Nazis.”

This isn’t the first time Krasner took an aggressive stance against federal authorities. Earlier this month, he vowed to arrest and convict any ICE agent he claimed violates the law, even as city leaders move to restrict immigration enforcement.

“If any law enforcement agent, any ICE agent is gonna come to Philly to commit crimes, then you can get the F out of here,” Krasner said at the press conference.

After taking office in 2018, Krasner established a dedicated immigration advisory role to review prosecutions involving non-citizens. While Krasner said the post would pursue so-called “immigration-neutral” results, the approach effectively allowed prosecutors to reassess — and in some instances reduce — charges against migrants so convictions would not trigger removal from the country.
