Kemi Badenoch is pushing for a full investigation into Mandelson’s appointment. Speaking to broadcasters just now the Tory leader said:
“This is yet another mess that the PM has got himself into. He had no reason to appoint Peter Mandelson was warned again and again and again that this man should not be appointed and all of these allegations that have come out to show that he is someone who is not fit for public office. I think there is a lot that needs to be looked into including investigating how he ever came to be appointed and all levers which can be pulled in order to remove him from public office uh should be looked into including removal from the House of Lords…
Peter Mandelson needs to come clean about every single thing that has happened and we want to see an investigation into how he was appointed…

We need to understand how it came to be that Peter Mandelson was appointed as ambassador in the first place. It does not appear that there was proper vetting. Allowing special advisers to carry out vetting is not the right process. Why was this waved? This is the heart of the scandal.
Why was it that Keir Starmer, despite knowing the allegations surrounding Peter Mandelson, insisted on making him the British ambassador, waving away processes which were in place. That’s why we want to see a full investigation.”
Labour is now claiming to have effectively pushed Mandelson out, claiming: “It is right that Peter Mandelson is no longer a member of the Labour Party. Disciplinary action was underway prior to his resignation.” Removing someone’s membership takes about four seconds…
