Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem announced Feb. 2 that all DHS officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota would be equipped with body cameras immediately.
Noem added that the department will expand the move across the nation as additional funding became available. The announcement comes after weeks of chaos in Minnesota and the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti amid federal law enforcement operations. Federal law has not required Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection officers to use body cameras, The Hill reported.
President Donald Trump said he supported the move while speaking to reporters in the White House. “Well, it wasn’t my decision. I leave it to her. They generally tend to be good for law enforcement because people can’t lie about what’s happening,” he said. “So it’s, generally speaking, I think 80% good for law enforcement.”
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer previously called for equipping federal officers, such as ICE and CBP agents, with body cameras as a condition for backing DHS funding. Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson expressed his lack of opposition to the measure.
“I don’t have a problem with that, personally,” Johnson, the chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said on CNN.
I just spoke with @RealTomHoman @ICEDirector @CBPCommissioner. Effective immediately we are deploying body cameras to every officer in the field in Minneapolis.
As funding is available, the body camera program will be expanded nationwide. We will rapidly acquire and deploy body…

This marks a reversal from previous opposition to such a deployment. President Donald Trump’s administration had opposed expanding the use of body cameras, Reuters reported. A congressional aide claimed CBP had access to around 13,400 body cameras for a staff of around 45,000 in June. (RELATED: LAPD Says It Will Not Enforce Gavin Newsom’s Mask Ban For ICE Agents)
The CBP officers involved in the shooting of Alex Pretti were wearing body cameras during the incident, NBC News reported, citing DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.
