Located in Boulder County, the crash happened Sunday at approximately 3:00 a.m, according to the Colorado State Patrol via ESPN. Authorities stated that Ponder, operating a 2023 Tesla Model 3, was driving around a curve when he lost control. From there, the vehicle crossed the eastbound lane, hitting a guardrail before slamming into an electrical line pole, ultimately going down an embankment and getting caught on fire.

At the scene, Ponder was pronounced dead. Police say that a preliminary investigation “shows that speed is suspected as a factor,” however, there will be a full-length investigation, according to ESPN.
Out of Opa Locka, Florida, the third-year sophomore was with the Buffaloes for the last two campaigns following a transfer from Bethune-Cookman. In the 2025 season, Ponder made appearances in two contests, tallying a pass attempt and two rushes. In 2024, he didn’t see any playing time.
