Austin police said Thursday that 19 people were shot during Sunday’s mass shooting on West Sixth Street, a higher number than previously reported, though the number of fatalities remains at four.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis announced the updated figure during a news briefing, explaining that the total includes the gunman.

Officials had previously reported a lower number of people shot in the incident.

According to police, two victims died at the scene Sunday night. A third victim died Monday from injuries sustained during the shooting.

Davis said two additional victims remain hospitalized following the attack. One of those victims is in critical condition.

During Thursday’s briefing, Davis presented a series of materials connected to the investigation, including audio recordings, police radio traffic, and several videos showing the events surrounding the shooting.

The materials included recordings of two 911 calls placed from the scene, radio transmissions between responding officers, and video captured by multiple sources.

Authorities also released footage taken from a private vehicle, video from a public surveillance camera, and body camera recordings from two officers who confronted the gunman.

The recordings provided additional details about how the violence unfolded in and around Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, where police said the rampage began.

The 911 calls captured moments of confusion and panic as people attempted to flee or find cover inside and outside the establishment.

Callers could be heard reporting the gunfire and describing the chaotic situation unfolding around them.

Police radio transmissions documented the speed of the emergency response. According to officials, first responders arrived at the scene within 57 seconds after the initial call.

The video captured by a private vehicle showed the gunman walking through a nearby parking lot carrying a rifle.

The footage showed the suspect moving back toward Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden moments before opening fire again.

Body camera footage from two officers showed their arrival at the scene and the confrontation with the gunman.

The video showed officers approaching the area and engaging the suspect, who was ultimately shot and killed by police.

Davis addressed the officers’ actions during the news briefing.

“It’s quite clear they saved multiple lives,” Davis said.

The Austin Police Department has a policy requiring the release of video following officer-involved shootings and other critical incidents.

The policy has been in place since 2020 and applies to several types of cases.

According to the department, the definition of a “critical incident” includes officer-involved shootings, certain use-of-force situations, deaths that occur while someone is in police custody, or “any other police encounter where the Chief of Police determines the release of video furthers a law enforcement purpose.”

The policy also requires coordination with the city’s oversight body during the preparation of video for public release.

The department must “consult and seek feedback” from the Austin Police Oversight office before releasing video footage connected to these types of incidents.

Thursday’s briefing marked the most detailed public account so far of the events that took place during the West Sixth Street shooting.

Officials said the materials released during the presentation were intended to provide additional clarity about the timeline of the attack and the response from officers.

Investigators continue to review evidence tied to the shooting, including the audio recordings, videos, and witness accounts gathered since Sunday’s incident.

Authorities have not announced additional information about the gunman beyond what was presented during the briefing.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the events leading up to the attack on West Sixth Street.
