Cop Hit In Shooting Near Synagogue In Baltimore, Police Say

Baltimore police said an officer and a suspect were shot in an active shooter incident in northwest Baltimore near a Synagogue on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting was reported near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue around 12:30 p.m, according to Fox5 DC.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said it happened while the officer was responding to a “barricade situation at a residence,” in an X post.

Officers entered the residence and allegedly faced gunfire from a suspect inside the home, according to CBS News Baltimore. An officer was shot in the leg, according to the outlet.

Baltimore Police told Fox News Digital that the shooting “was NOT at a synagogue or religious institution.”

The injured officer was taken to a Shock Trauma downtown for treatment, Fox5DC reported. Police have not confirmed if the suspect was hospitalized. (RELATED: Baltimore Democrats Finally Abandoned Criminal Justice Reform — Now They Boast A Decades-Low Homicide Rate)

A Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team arrived and “neutralized” the suspect, who was pronounced deceased on the scene, CBS News Baltimore reported, citing Police Commissioner Richard Worley.

Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3 said the police members involved are “in good spirits” in an X post.

“We are aware of the police involved shooting in the NWD. President Mancuso and State Trustee Cohen are at homicide with our involved members while Guard Glazerman is at Shock Trauma,” the group stated. “All involved members are in good spirits.”

Scott further commended the Baltimore police officers.

“The brave men and women of BPD put their lives on the line every day to build a better, safer Baltimore. As the situation develops, our hearts are with this officer, their family, and the entire department,” Scott said.

Authorities are asking people to avoid the area as they continue their investigation.

“Media Staging Area will be at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, at the intersection of Penn Street and W. Lombard Street,” Baltimore Police said in a statement. “Avoid the surrounding areas. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”

No injuries have been reported among the public or synagogue congregants, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The motivation for the shooting is unclear as of publication.
