Television personality Kathie Lee Gifford recently criticized the current tone of ABC’s daytime talk show The View, saying the program has grown more divisive and hostile compared to earlier years, as reported by Page Six.
Gifford, 72, discussed the topic during an appearance on Monday’s episode of the “Tomi Lahren Is Fearless” podcast.
The conversation turned to whether public discourse has become more divided in recent years, prompting Gifford to reflect on her experiences appearing on The View in the past.

“There’s just more of us — and we’re meaner now,” Gifford said during the podcast discussion. “People at least would pretend to have some manners. Now, there’s a viciousness.”
Gifford recalled that during earlier appearances on the daytime talk show she had productive conversations with several hosts and did not encounter major conflicts.

“I mean, I used to be able to go on ‘The View’ and talk to Joy [Behar] and Whoopi [Goldberg] and a lot of the other people there — Debbie Matenopoulos and I are still good pals — and never had a problem, you know, with anybody because they weren’t trying to … I don’t proselytize everything.”
She continued by describing how she typically discusses personal beliefs when appearing in public settings.
“I share my faith, but I don’t say, ‘You’re going to go to hell if you don’t.’ I don’t do that, you know?” Gifford said. “I want people to have a little bit more heaven in their life than hell.”
Podcast host Tomi Lahren then asked Gifford whether she believed the same atmosphere would exist if she were to appear on The View today.
In response, Gifford again pointed to what she described as a more aggressive tone in public discourse and television programming.
“I mean, everybody seems like they’re just miserable people now,” Gifford said. “I may make people miserable just talking the way we’re talking, but nobody will ever confuse me with a miserable person, right?”

She added, “I have joy personified.”
The View first premiered in 1997 and has long been known for panel discussions on politics, culture, and current events. The program regularly features debates between co-hosts with differing political viewpoints.
The current panel of hosts includes Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Sara Haines, and Alyssa Farah Griffin.
Over the years, the show has frequently generated headlines for heated exchanges between hosts during live broadcasts as well as reports of behind-the-scenes disagreements.
One widely discussed departure involved former co-host Meghan McCain, who left the program in 2021. McCain later described the circumstances surrounding her exit during an appearance on “The Commentary Magazine Podcast” in August 2022.
According to McCain, a remark made on-air by Behar during McCain’s return from maternity leave contributed to her decision to leave the show.
“I finally went back to the show, and the day I went back to the show, Joy Behar said on air, ‘Nobody missed you, we didn’t miss you, you shouldn’t have come back,’” McCain recalled.
She said the moment had a significant impact on her decision to leave.
“I didn’t feel supported when I had my baby, and I didn’t feel supported coming back, and that was ultimately it,” McCain said. “That was why I left!”
Gifford’s comments during the podcast discussion add to the ongoing conversation about the tone of political debate on television talk shows and how those conversations have evolved over time.
