Suspect dead after ramming bomb-laden truck into Michigan synagogue

Michigan authorities on Thursday said the driver who plowed his explosives-filled vehicle into a synagogue is dead, ending the frantic episode that saw dozens of police officers respond to the house of worship just outside Detroit.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said security at Temple Israel opened fire on the assailant after he rammed the truck into the building.

Officials said the driver, whose identity wasn’t shared, was found dead inside the vehicle that appeared to have a stash of explosives in the back.

“Everything that was supposed to happen, happened,” Sheriff Bouchard said. “Security did their job, and then the responders did theirs.”

Police said no synagogue staff or children at the temple’s preschool were harmed in the incident in West Bloomfield.

A security professional was hit by the truck and was taken to a hospital. Police said the guard will make a full recovery.

Sheriff Bouchard did say that something caught fire in the vehicle, but did not elaborate. Technicians and bomb-sniffing dogs were brought onto the scene to investigate.

The vehicle still had smoke coming out of it when news cameras reached the scene.
