Armed Man Rams Vehicle Into Michigan Synagogue, Gets Fatally Shot by Security [WATCH]

An armed man rammed a vehicle into Temple Israel, the nation’s largest Reform synagogue, in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and was fatally shot by security during the incident, according to information obtained by The Associated Press.

The attack occurred at the synagogue located in a Detroit suburb. As The Boston Herald reported, A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press on Thursday that the suspect was armed with a rifle when he crashed a vehicle into the building.

After the vehicle struck the synagogue, it caught fire, the person said.

Investigators are still working to identify the man and determine a possible motive for the attack. The person who spoke to The Associated Press emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.

Because the inquiry is ongoing, the individual spoke on condition of anonymity and said they were not authorized to publicly discuss additional details.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard addressed the incident during an earlier news conference, confirming that security personnel at the synagogue exchanged gunfire with at least one individual. Bouchard also stated that no one was in custody at the time of the briefing.

Local television station WDIV-TV reported that a truck crashed into the synagogue building.

Video footage from the scene showed smoke rising from the synagogue’s roof while numerous police vehicles surrounded the area as law enforcement responded to the situation.

Authorities quickly moved to secure the facility following the crash and the gunfire.

Kash Patel said agents were responding to what he described as an “apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation” at the synagogue.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reported that officers were clearing the building as part of the response to the incident.

Parents with children inside an early childhood learning center located within the synagogue complex were permitted to retrieve their children after receiving approval from law enforcement.

Approximately a dozen parents ran to the building to collect their children after police allowed access to the facility. The situation also prompted nearby schools to implement safety precautions.

The West Bloomfield School District placed its schools on lockdown as authorities handled the emergency response in the area.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement after the incident, indicating that she was monitoring developments.

“This is heartbreaking,” Whitmer said. “Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

Temple Israel describes itself as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States. According to information published on its website, the congregation has approximately 12,000 members.

The synagogue complex includes an early childhood education center and hosts educational programs for both families and adults.

The institution states that it works to support Jewish communities globally and seeks to build community through Reform Judaism.

In response to the incident, the Jewish Federation of Detroit issued a message to Jewish institutions across the region advising additional security measures.

The organization directed local Jewish facilities “to go into lockout protocol — nobody in or out of your building.”

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect involved in the attack.

Investigators are continuing to examine evidence from the scene as they work to determine what led up to the vehicle crash and subsequent exchange of gunfire.
