Off-Duty NYPD Captain Arrested After Assault on Accused Sex Offender [WATCH]

An off-duty New York Police Department captain has been arrested and charged after authorities say he assaulted a man who had been accused in a separate case of groping a teenage girl, according to police and court documents, as reported by The New York Post.

Capt. Kai Bowen, 42, was taken into custody in Queens last Wednesday and charged with assault in the second degree, criminal obstruction of breathing, and harassment.

The charges stem from an alleged confrontation with 67-year-old Mahadeo Narain, according to a criminal complaint.

Prosecutors say Bowen grabbed Narain, threw him to the ground, and repeatedly struck him with his fists. The complaint alleges Bowen also kicked Narain in the leg and placed his hands around Narain’s neck before choking him.

Authorities say Narain suffered several injuries during the incident, including lacerations to his face, red marks on his shoulders, and bruising to his leg.

Prosecutors also reported that Narain experienced substantial pain following the encounter.

After the confrontation, Narain was transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of his injuries, according to the complaint.

The alleged assault occurred one day after Narain had been charged in a separate case involving a teenage girl.

According to court documents tied to that case, Narain was charged with multiple offenses, including forcible touching, endangering the welfare of a child, and sexual abuse in the third degree.

Prosecutors allege Narain groped a 15-year-old girl’s breasts, squeezed her, and attempted to kiss her.

Sources told PIX 11 that the teenage girl is believed to be a relative of Bowen.

Details about the alleged confrontation between Bowen and Narain were included in the criminal complaint filed in Queens.

Authorities said Bowen was arrested following the incident and later released on his own recognizance.

He is scheduled to return to court on April 27.

Bowen’s attorney said the incident will be viewed differently as more information becomes public.

“We’re confident that Kai did nothing criminal and at the end of the day, when the facts come out, the public will understand what happened here,” Keith Welz, an attorney for Bowen, told The Post.

Narain also appeared in court regarding the charges connected to the alleged encounter with the teenage girl.

According to court records, he was placed on supervised release and issued an order of protection prohibiting contact with the teen he is accused of groping.

Narain is scheduled to return to court on May 6 as that case proceeds.

The two matters are separate legal cases moving through the Queens court system. Narain faces charges related to the alleged incident with the teenage girl, while Bowen faces assault-related charges stemming from the alleged confrontation.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the encounter beyond the information contained in the criminal complaint.

Both cases remain pending.
