The New York Jets are finalizing a trade that will send quarterback Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, with Kansas City expected to send a 2027 sixth round draft pick to New York in return.
Fields’ preference was to land in Kansas City despite interest from other teams, and the move places him behind Patrick Mahomes on a depth chart that suddenly matters more than usual. Mahomes is returning from a torn ACL, and Kansas City’s quarterback planning has shifted accordingly as the team prepares for a season in which its starter’s Week 1 status is not treated as automatic.
Kansas City’s 2025 backup, Gardner Minshew, is no longer in the building. Minshew signed in free agency with the Arizona Cardinals, creating a clear opening for the Chiefs to add a veteran option with starting experience.
Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement
For the Jets, the Fields experiment ends quickly after a single season that never stabilized. New York signed Fields last March to a two year, $40 million contract, expecting him to take over the offense and provide a longer runway at the position. Instead, the season turned into a midyear quarterback change. The Jets benched Fields for veteran Tyrod Taylor after halftime of a Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers, a decision made with the team trailing 13-3 at the break.
Fields’ 2025 statistical profile in New York was modest: 1,259 passing yards, seven touchdowns, one interception, and a Total QBR of 38.7. Those numbers reflect the broader story of his time with the Jets: flashes, stretches of conservative production, and an offense that never fully clicked for long enough to settle the weekly debate.
By moving Fields now, the Jets further clarify what their quarterback room is supposed to look like in 2026. Earlier this month, New York reacquired Geno Smith in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, sending a 2026 sixth round pick (No. 208 overall) to the Raiders in exchange for Smith and a seventh round pick (No. 219 overall). The deal also included a contract restructure with the Raiders covering most of Smith’s remaining salary, limiting the Jets’ commitment to just above the veteran minimum.
Smith’s return to New York comes 13 years after the Jets originally drafted him in the second round in 2013, and it sets up a different kind of reset for a team coming off a rough season. With Smith in place and Fields headed out, the Jets’ offseason quarterback direction is no longer split-screen.

For the Chiefs, Fields’ arrival is less about long-term quarterback succession and more about getting through the next stretch of the calendar with a credible plan. The Chiefs are adding a player who has started extensively in the league, is still in his 20s, and can step in if needed while Mahomes completes rehab. It is also a low-cost acquisition in draft terms: a 2027 sixth round pick is the type of price teams pay when the urgency is real but the commitment is intentionally limited.
The trade remains contingent on a physical, but the framework is clear: New York turns the page on Fields after one season, Kansas City adds depth behind an injured star, and both teams move into the new league year with quarterback plans that look a lot more practical than aspirational.
