Curfew in effect in 4 D.C. juvenile zones this weekend

The Metropolitan Police Department said four juvenile curfew zones are in place this weekend across the District of Columbia.

The curfew zones include the Navy Yard zone previously implemented earlier this month, a U Street Corridor zone with different boundaries, compared with the one set up also this month, as well as curfew areas in Chinatown and in the Wharf area in Southwest, police said.

The police posted images showing the boundaries of each zone on a map on social media.

The four curfew zones were in effect Friday from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will cover the same period Saturday and Sunday. Within each zone, minors are forbidden from gathering in groups of nine unless they are:

  • Accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Engaged in First Amendment activity such as a protest.
  • Involved in or dealing with an emergency.
  • On the sidewalk next to their residence or a neighbor’s residence provided the neighbor has made a complaint to the police.
  • Participating in a city, civic organization, religious or school-sponsored activity provided that the organizers are transporting them.
  • Riding in a car or other vehicle involved in interstate travel.
  • Running an errand provided that they do not stop in the zone.
  • Working or returning from work provided that they do not stop in the zone.

Along with the curfew zones, police said, the general curfew is in place for minors every day from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

While the police implemented zones the weekend of March 6, they did not do so last weekend. On March 14, police said, upward of 200 minors gathered in a park area between New Jersey Avenue and First Street SE.

The police are looking for two sets of suspects for two crimes related to the gathering. The police alleged that multiple suspects attacked a juvenile and stole shoes and a jacket in the 1200 block of First Street SE before running away. The victim was uninjured.

The other suspects are accused of attacking two juveniles near M Street and New Jersey Avenue SE and robbing them of unspecified personal belongings before fleeing on foot. The two victims went to a hospital to get minor injuries treated.

In addition, two suspects were arrested in two other incidents.

A 15-year-old boy from Southwest was stopped by the National Guard and arrested after, police allege, he fired a gun in the air in the park area between New Jersey Avenue and First Street SE. No one was injured, but the teen is facing charges of unlawfully firing a gun, endangerment with a gun and carrying a pistol without a license.

The Secret Service stopped a rideshare car in the 900 block of New Jersey Avenue SE, and a 16-year-old boy from Southeast is accused of trying to leave a gun inside the car. The gun was recovered, and the teen is facing charges of carrying a pistol without a license.

The juvenile curfew zones are set to expire on April 15.

D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto, Ward 2 Democrat, told Washington’s WJLA-TV that “right now, it doesn’t have the votes it needs on the council to extend it. I’m really worried about that, and think it is a tool that has helped curtail some of these actions.”
