A Colorado man convicted of sexually assaulting a child over a period of years was arrested in New Mexico after authorities say he cut off his ankle monitor and attempted to flee the United States ahead of the final day of his trial, as reported by The New York Post.
Jorge Campos, 42, was scheduled to appear in court on Friday in Colorado for the conclusion of his trial in a case involving the sexual abuse of his girlfriend’s daughter.
According to a news release from Colorado’s 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Campos failed to appear in court to hear the verdict.

Authorities responded to his residence in New Castle, Colorado, where they discovered his ankle monitor discarded in a dumpster. Investigators determined that Campos had removed the device and left the area.
Campos remained at large for two days before law enforcement received a tip indicating he was traveling on a bus bound for Mexico, according to CBS News Colorado. The information prompted a search that extended into New Mexico.

He was ultimately taken into custody on Sunday at a bus stop located at a gas station in Chaparral, New Mexico, which is approximately an hour from the U.S.-Mexico border.
During the search effort, officials released a photograph of Campos showing him wearing a green shirt and black pants while leaving a hotel in New Mexico.
In the image, he is carrying a large black backpack that appeared heavily packed. Authorities did not specify when or where the image was captured.
Campos is expected to be extradited back to Colorado, where he will face additional charges related to allegedly removing his ankle monitor and fleeing while awaiting the outcome of his trial.
Prior to his arrest, Campos had already been convicted on five counts of “sexual assault of a child – pattern of abuse.”
Prosecutors said the charges stem from years of abuse involving his girlfriend’s daughter, with the conduct beginning when the victim was 11 years old.
The case was brought to trial over four days, during which the victim testified about the abuse. Court officials noted her testimony during the proceedings.
“She was violated, villainized, and voiceless and faced unimaginable trauma with remarkable strength,” Deputy District Attorney Brynn Chase said.
“But she found her voice and brought it with her to the witness stand. We hope this verdict brings her a sense of justice and vindication.”
According to the district attorney’s office, the victim’s mother initially believed the allegations were not true and thought her daughter had “made up the story of being sexually assaulted.”
However, a medical examination conducted at a hospital later corroborated the child’s claims.
Campos now faces the possibility of life in prison following his conviction. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.
Authorities have indicated that additional charges related to his attempted flight from justice will be pursued once he is returned to Colorado custody.
