Steve Hilton criticized the exclusion of certain Democratic candidates from a scheduled debate in California, arguing that their absence was due to weak performance rather than any discriminatory factor, and pointing to what he described as political interference behind the event’s cancellation.
Hilton referred to the excluded candidates as “low polling Democrats,” or “lpds,” and said their inability to qualify for the debate stemmed from a lack of support and fundraising.
He rejected any suggestion that race played a role in their exclusion, instead attributing it to measurable campaign shortcomings.

“The reason that these low polling Democrats, the lpds, as I call them, were excluded, is not nothing to with race. It’s because they’re not doing well enough in the race. They’re not getting anywhere, they’re not raising money, they’re not getting any support, but they insist on going into the debate to they want the rules to be broken, to have them in because of political correctness,” Hilton said.
The debate, which was scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, was canceled within 24 hours of the event. Hilton described the abrupt decision as disorganized and pointed to what he characterized as broader issues within California’s political leadership.
“The more worrying thing, of course, it’s classic California, exactly as you said, and the fact that they cancel it within 24 hours. I found out about it yesterday morning on the way to the airport at 6am flying down to LA to do the debate on the day of the debate. They cancel it. So there’s the shambles and incompetence, all those things,” Hilton said.
Hilton also described what he said was direct involvement from senior Democratic officials in the state legislature.

According to Hilton, leaders in both chambers contacted the University of Southern California, which was hosting the debate, to push for the inclusion of the candidates who had not met the qualification criteria.
“But actually the really serious part is that the final thing that caused it to be canceled was these whining lpds, the low polling Democrats got their cronies in the California legislature, the leader of the Democrats in the State Assembly, the leader of the State Senate, powerful body to write to USC demanding that they be included,” Hilton said.
He characterized that intervention as improper and said it amounted to undue pressure on the organizers of the debate.
“Now that is corruption, that is bullying and intimidation,” Hilton said.
Hilton broadened his criticism to the overall leadership in California, describing it as ineffective and expressing confidence that voters would respond in the upcoming election cycle.
“The whole regime in California is corrupt and useless, and that’s why I’m very confident we’re going to kick them out this year,” Hilton said.
