We’re In For Doozy Of Season As Robots Are Already Getting MLB Managers Ejected

Say what you want about the robots, but they’re already shooting up the entertainment value.

Let’s start with Saturday, as the Boston Red Sox landed a 6-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, which came in extra innings. It sounds like a thriller, and it was, but the biggest magnifying glass is on umpire C. B. Bucknor.

In the game, Boston manager Alex Cora ended up being ejected by Bucknor for his argument against a check-swing call against Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. To make the situation even wilder, Bucknor didn’t even attempt to make an appeal towards the first-base umpire, and this came after multiple of Bucknor’s calls were overturned by the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system.

When we got to Sunday, we had more drama, with this one being directly connected to the ABS system. As a matter of fact, Minnesota Twins manager Derek Shelton would see himself become the first manager ever to be hit with an ejection over the robots, which came in a defeat to the Baltimore Orioles.

In the top of the ninth inning, Minnesota was attempting to pull off a comeback. With one out on the board, the Twins had a runner on first while first baseman Josh Bell was up to bat taking on relief pitcher Ryan Helsley. It looked like Helsley tossed a 3-2 pitch that was outside of the zone, which issued a walk for Bell. If it played out, this would have the Twins with two runners on base. While Bell was walking to first, Helsley pointed towards his head and requested a challenge. The pitch ended up being reversed and ruled a strike three by the ABS system.

Coming out of the dugout, Shelton was absolutely furious, making the argument that Helsley’s challenge didn’t come fast enough. Following some yelling and some shouting, Shelton was handed an ejection from the contest.

Needless to say, this season will be F-U-N.
