Recently Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu sat down for a chat with Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy to discuss the state of play in the war with Iran. (And full disclosure, I am a Newsmax contributor.)
The conversation was as revealing as it was perceptive. Among other things, Bibi made it clear that he believed Iran, if not stopped, was on its way to becoming a serious nuclear threat not only to Israel and the wider Middle East but to the United States as well. Said the PM: “The question is whether the West will wake up. Iran has been pursuing nuclear weapons and delivery systems for years, yet many ignored it.”
Then he added this about President Trump: “Donald Trump, he said 40 years ago … Iran is the great danger.’ When they took over hostages in the American embassy, he said, ‘This regime has to be confronted.’”
Exactly.
The troubling thing here is that there are Americans and Westerners aplenty who simply ignore history and/or are flat out ignorant of it. It needs to be remembered that the cast of characters in any generation can and will change. But, alas, human nature does not change. There are always in humanity’s midst those obsessed with ruling the world. And those who are obsessed with ignoring that.
Doubtless, one of the earliest and most vivid signs of this problem in the post-World War I rise of Adolph Hitler was that Hitler and his obsession with German fascism — aka the Nazi Party — were mostly ignored by Western officials and observers of the day. He made plain what he was about, and while the world looked the other way, he amassed enough power to become chancellor. And on September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland; his attempt at world domination was underway. (RELATED: If FDR Had Killed Hitler?)
And now?
History, it has been noted, may not repeat — but it can rhyme. And in today’s world, while there may not be Hitler, the decidedly evil ambitions of the Iranian mullahs are on full display for the rest of the world.
Over there at Iran International, a site opposing the mullahs, is this headline: “Over 36,500 killed in Iran’s deadliest massacre, documents reveal.”
The story reports:
More than 36,500 Iranians were killed by security forces during the January 8-9 crackdown on nationwide protests, making it the deadliest two-day protest massacre in history, according to documents reviewed by Iran International’s Editorial Board.
Iran International’s Editorial Board can confirm the death toll after reviewing newly obtained classified documents, field reports, and accounts from medical staff, witnesses, and victims’ families.
The new information provides a clearer picture of the killing pattern and the scale of a crime that can now be described as the largest and bloodiest massacre of civilians during street protests, over a two-day period, in history.
Or in other words, not unlike the American public and the larger world mostly ignoring the rise of Hitler and his Nazi Party until the Germans invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, so too are there many Americans who are looking at Iran’s build up, its mass murder of its own citizens, and obsession with getting nuclear weapons — and then looking the other way.
As of now, Secretary of War Hegseth is saying regime change in Iran has occurred. Will Iranian policy change? Stay tuned.
Again, these words of wisdom from Prime Minister Netanyahu about President Trump and Iran. The words:
The question is whether the West will wake up. Iran has been pursuing nuclear weapons and delivery systems for years, yet many ignored it.
“Donald Trump, he said 40 years ago … ‘Iran is the great danger.’ When they took over hostages in the American embassy, he said, ‘This regime has to be confronted.’”
History recalls as well that many American elites of the 1930s also ignored the rise of Japanese General Hideki Tojo. Tojo had sent Japanese forces on a rampage across various Pacific countries (China and the Philippines, to name two), a reality many Americans preferred to ignore. Until, that is, the early morning hours of December 7, 1941, when Japanese bombers swarmed down on the American base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By then, ignoring the Japanese was no longer possible.
In short? When serious threats appear on the horizon, it is not only not wise to ignore them; it is foolish beyond measure.
Over the weekend, various American cities, including my own Pennsylvania state capital of Harrisburg, were flooded with thousands gathering under the banner of “No Kings.”
It is safe to ask what any of these people will say if/when the day arrives that America (or Israel or Europe) is attacked with an Iranian nuclear weapon.
In which case, as with the Americans of that 1930s time period, they will have awakened too late from their state of denial, only to find that, as with Pearl Harbor and Europe in 1941, today’s America and the Western World are once again under attack.
Attacking President Trump for his staunch actions against the Iranian dictators may be popular with the No Kings crowd. But it is all too possible that one not-so-fine day, they will awaken to find that a nuclear-armed Iran has brought terror and disaster to America and the Western World.
And that the only wanna-be Kings in the world are a crowd of nuclear-armed radical Iranian mullahs.
Safe to say, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu, along with President Trump, gets it.
And as always: Stay tuned.
