‘Sick To My Stomach’: Wisconsin Community Outraged After Driver’s Treatment Of Deer Caught On Video

A surveillance camera outside a Wisconsin auto repair shop captured a vehicle looping around a city block four times to repeatedly drive over an injured deer, setting off fury among locals and a police investigation.

The footage was recorded outside Manitowoc Auto Repair, NBC 26 reported. Workers later discovered a car emblem at the scene. The video racked up roughly 9,000 views after being posted to Facebook. “I can’t imagine anyone would think this would be the right way to handle this, not doing it once but a total of four times. It made me sick to my stomach,” Cavanaugh told NBC 26.

When asked what he would tell the person behind the wheel, shop owner Tim Kolbeck kept it short: “You need help.”

Jerome Theys of Wildlife of Wisconsin, a rehabilitation group that works with white-tailed deer, told NBC 26 in a follow-up report that the animal’s original injury may not have been fatal.

“The deer may have been in an accident it may have been injured, it could have been a survivable injury. Not after the second time or the third time or the fourth time,” Theys said.

“Putting it out of its misery is one thing. Do it humanely. Using a car multiple times to put something down is not humane,” Theys added.

Resident Susan Marland told the outlet she had attended a Lakeshore Humane Society fundraiser the same evening and called the contrast “sickening.”

Wisconsin law prohibits the cruel treatment of any animal under Statute 951.02. According to the state’s criminal code, an intentional violation that results in an animal’s death can be charged as a Class I felony.

Manitowoc police said they are looking into the incident but have not identified a suspect despite the emblem recovered at the scene, according to the outlet.
