The latest hotness on X is people insisting most of the people who believe they watched the Challenger blow up in real time are creating a false memory and they really just saw it later on the news. Sigh.
Anyone who experienced the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, like I did, is probably a bit hesitant to get too excited about the Artemis II launch today. I truly hope our children don’t have to experience such tragedy. May the Universe welcome them and return them safely home…

It all started today with a recollection of how traumatic that day was for the world. The world was so excited about a launch with a regular person (a teacher) on board and it ended in absolute tragedy.
99.9% of people who “experienced” the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live.
Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It’s a fascinating collective false memory. https://t.co/T1vKcdV4l0

Then, along comes Dave Plummer to insist we are all living in a mass psychosis event or something.
Let me get this straight. You think a space shuttle with a civilian teacher on board exploded during launch, killing all on board, and teachers all across the country decided to show the *replay* to millions of students? https://t.co/mEqYMup6w8
— Eric Spencer (@JustEric) April 1, 2026
Exactly. That’s morbid. The TVs were rolled in for students to watch an exciting event. It just went really wrong.
I remember Columbia, not Challenger, but I think this is wrong. Teachers competed for Christa McAuliffe’s spot. There was a full court press on incorporating Challenger into elementary education. It wasn’t typical to watch a shuttle liftoff, but Challenger’s was intentionally… https://t.co/oeT5uDcmyo

Teachers all over America were so excited about this event. Children learned about the launch with materials NASA distributed to schools.
This is insultingly false. Thousands of kids (including myself) were watching it live. It was a huge deal. The Shuttle was massively popular at the time and a civilian teacher going up made it even a bigger deal. Schools setup TVs for classes to see the launch live. I’ll never… https://t.co/EpfS0QByi0

I watched it on one of these, and lol no they did not wheel this into my 5th grade classroom expressly to show us a replay of that teacher & crew exploding. We watched it live along with a ton of other kids across the country. https://t.co/DveIpbUhCx pic.twitter.com/tGxxrV3AUT

No way teachers would have rolled those televisions in to show kids a morbid scene. Classrooms were all watching live.
Almost no one, except millions of schoolchildren, because one of the astronauts was a teacher.
There’s a reason it’s a generation X trauma more than any other. Not only were we watching live, we’d spent weeks doing “teacher in space” activities ahead of it, and some of us even… https://t.co/UsloSY5SyK

In fact NASA had arranged for schools across the country to broadcast the launch: “The ill-fated January 18, 1986, Challenger space shuttle launch was watched live on television by millions of American schoolchildren.” https://t.co/lqWPZH5Pnm https://t.co/sSdVH8rWPy

I was in 10th grade and we most definitely watched it live in my Civics class. My teacher cried, we were frozen to our chairs – stunned by what we witnessed. But sure, you’re right – 🙄

Some people have no problem being so loud and so wrong. Sigh.
