Nancy Metayer Bowen, a city official in Coral Springs, Florida, was found dead in her home on Wednesday morning as authorities launched an investigation described as a “domestic violence incident,” according to police, as reported by Fox News.

Officers located Bowen at approximately 10 a.m. after initiating a welfare check, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Brad Mock said limited details were being released as the investigation remained ongoing. He confirmed that Bowen’s husband, Stephen Bowen, was taken into police custody.

Mock said investigators are not searching for any additional suspects in connection with the case.

Bowen served as vice mayor of Coral Springs at the time of her death. She was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and secured re-election in 2024.

According to her official biography, she was appointed by the commission in November to serve a second one-year term as vice mayor.

Before entering public office, Bowen worked as an environmental scientist and previously served on the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Her family confirmed her death in a statement posted to her social media accounts, reflecting on her time in public service and personal life.

“Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose,” the statement said.

“She believed in bringing people together, listening to those she served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in her community. To us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love — someone who always put others before herself.

“While many knew her as a leader and advocate, we knew her as a sister, a daughter, and a friend whose warmth and laughter filled every room. Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but in the countless lives she touched.”

The City of Coral Springs issued a statement on its official Facebook page, acknowledging Bowen’s service and expressing condolences.

“Her impact on Coral Springs is immeasurable, and her loss leaves a void in our hearts,” the city wrote. “We ask our community to keep her family, loved ones, and all who are grieving in your thoughts and prayers. In this difficult time, we stand together as one city. We will carry her light, even in this darkness.”

Several political figures also responded publicly. Maxwell Alejandro Frost said he was saddened by the news, describing Bowen as a “tireless advocate, a dedicated progressive leader, and a powerful voice for her community.”

Nikki Fried said she had spoken with Bowen days earlier.

“I held her in a hug at our party’s leadership summit, never imagining it would be one of our last moments together,” Fried said. “Nancy was my friend and a friend to everyone who has ever believed that democracy was worth fighting for. The world is less bright without her in it.”

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding Bowen’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
